ADAM LINDSAY GORDON 1833-1870 The poet of Australia. The only Australian to have his memorial and Bust in The Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.
The first poet of note to describe the Australian Bush to the Australian Public in words that caught their imagination. Frederick McCubbin, Roberts and Condor used his poetry as themes to paint the Australian bush and together went on to become The Impressionist Painters and the Heidelberg School. The Australian Literature Society was formed at an evening to discuss the poems of Adam Lindsay Gordon. The Adam Lindsay Gordon Commemorative Committee was formed to keep the memory of the poet alive.
